Monday

GoodBye, Miyo

Date : 27 November 2006

Miyo, a mongrel puppy, died 3 days after I adopted her from SPCA, Seberang Jaya, Penang.

It was like love at first sight when I saw her caged along with her mother and sisters at SPCA. She was so gentle like a little gal, cute with a small pretty face and eyes. Looking at me pitifully, and I immediately made the decision of her adoption.

I did not know that she was infected Canine ParvoVirus when I wanted to adopt her. I should have thought of something wrong when I saw the bloody feces around the area and her poos. It was only slightly watery, we did not even think that it was pinkish due to blood stinged. How the hell would I know the whole SPCA is infected by Parvo Virus???!!! I thought she was vomiting worms out after given dewormer!

Ever since I brought Miyo back to my hostel, she only had a meal. After that was vomiting and diarrhoea and she refused to eat.... The next day, all I could do was speeding all the way from Penang to Johor. Have u ever know that when u speed fast enough on the highway, u don't even need to switch on the wiper during raining? My dog was weak, and she just sleep all the way back home.

On the third day, I decided to bring her to doctor. And she was diagnosed to be infected by ParvoVirus, which is highly pathogenic to puppy. Signs are bloody diarrhoea, dehydration, hypoglycemia then death. Miyo refused to eat, anything she took in was vomitted out. She started losing alot of electrolyte and glucose. Even 100plus also cannot relieve her. Her heart was beating very fast and she could hardly stand up.

With some symptomatic treatment, I was still hoping that my gal would be strong enough both at mind and body to go through this sickness. Too bad, she still did not manage to make it through the midnight of the fourth day....

Was I wrong to bring back a sick dog? I didn't know that she was sick! Mum has been blaming me for bringing back a sick dog.... =( Because of Miyo, we have to quarantine the other 2 dogs; we have to disinfect everything in the house, as the virus can survive in the environment for half a year.

Then I started to ponder... If I never did adopt Miyo, will she die in SPCA? Is it better to die in there or die in my house? How did she feel about me adopting her? Was I making her life worse? Is it I shouldn't have bring her home? Was I reckless at my action? I am deadly sad and confused now.

It is for sure that every dogs in the SPCA now is threatened by Parvo. And I heard that Dr. Goh who adopted 6 dogs from there was facing the same problem too. So, the dogs in the SPCA are dying???!!! I am worried for the rest of the dogs still residing in the SPCA. I called the volunteer working in the SPCA to alert her about the outbreak of the disease. However, from the conversation, I sensed that not much action can be done due to the economic condition. This branch of SPCA is short of funds to give every dogs a vaccine. I am afraid that I will dream of the dogs in SPCA dying one after another.....

I am still thinking of what the doctor had said to me in the clinic..... "What's the point of having SPCA when dogs are not treated? They might as well die on the road side than in that contaminated SPCA." I have no idea how to respond to him at the moment, I don't really like this doctor anyway.

Who should be blamed? We should blame those people who are cruel enough to dump their pets; those irresponsible owners that leave their pets to mate and breed; those people that don't spay their pets......

Plz don't think that spaying a pet is making them suffer. Try to think the other way round, if they accidentally get pregnant and give birth to offsprings that you cannot manage to keep all..... in the end you dump them all.... then you are the culprit who is making more animals suffer.

I pray,

Miyo, may you rest in peace and have a better life in your next life.
We will remember you and love you always.

Story's Funeral

Date : 11 November 2006
Venue : Cheras

Dog's Name : Story
Breed : Miniature Schnauzer

This was the first ever dog funeral I attended in my life. Story died of an accident, falling onto ground right on her head and died due to hematoma in the brain.

Life is so unpredictable. Story was forced to part with her twin, who was born with anencepalic and died at birth. Sad enough, she is now joining her twin.

This puppy was lucky enough to have an owner that loved her so much to have a proper crimation for her as a funeral. The funeral was a sad one, raindrops of that afternoon were like tears from God.

May Story rest in peace.....

DOGATHON 2006

DATE : 13 AUGUST 2006
VENUE : BUKIT EXPO, UPM

Yeah, Dogathon is back again this year, with the theme of "Pirates, All paws on Deck!"
Main sponsor of this year had been changed, not Purina anymore, but Pedigree.

So many events on-going on this day. So busy roaming around to look at so many cute doggies all over the grass field!

So many works had been done just for the preparation of this day. As committee of the decoration team, we spent so many weekdays and weekends looking for materials, buying materials, loading stuffs, making deco&props. And here came the result of our titik peluh.......

Our magnificent artificial pirate ship...... made of papers.... in the end spoilt by ignorant owners who placed their doggies including Golden Retriever on the deck just to take photos......

The Hardcore 3some of deco teams.... working like helll......all sun-tanned....

The floor plan a.k.a the treasure map with our on-going events and competitions stated

Another of my titik peluh, i sew this pirate shirt, but don't really know what was the purpose of making it..... kakaka

My treasure chest, but don't know who go and put a rubbish bag beside it, what the.....

Yeah, my main target during the DOGATHON is always HUSKIES!!!!

See how much a St. Bernard can leave its saliva on my hand just after 5 seconds!

Our Ah Bee, a Shih Tzu, during the fastest eating duo, he lose as he is always too particular of dog food, refused to eat what he doesnot like to eat!

Treasure Chest, a game that required the teams of owners and their dogs to snatch as many treasures as they can in limited time.

A dog owner and his Goldie, during Dogathon Idol. Showing off the beauty and skills of the dog.

A chowchow dressed like a pirate! So cute! And especially the fluffy hair covered by bandana.

And here are the examples of how different species can look alike!

Look at the patches! These 2 dogs had drawn alot of attentions of that day, killed alot films and occupied memory spaces of many. This 2 dogs were actually love at first sight for each other! Having alot of fun and rolling around after meeting, and could not even bear to leave, haha. Not only the 2 dogs are making frens with each other, but their owners also. This is what ppl gained in joining Dogathon. Dog lovers meet each others and share!

This is cool, he is not the owner of the dog, but our fren. One word,--- coincidence. Amazing, even the dog owner also surprised and admitted that they really looked alike in the way of their hairstyle done! Even the color also......

Wah, the beginning of another love story.

One last shot of the whole crew before we tearing down all the canopies and cleaning up the place.

DATE : 29 MAY 2006

It took place at a seagrass bed located at South China Sea, in between Singapore and Johor. Just beside it, we can see Pulau Merambong and the Second Link highway and Singapore Checkpoint.

The Second Link

The seagrass bed can only be seen when the tide is low.... we were actually walking in the middle of the sea, stepping on the sea grasses.

Shy Jye and I arrived at Gelang Patah Petronas Petrol Station at 5.20am to meet up with our guide Mr. Choo, a lecturer of Marine Biology from KUSTEM. After a short briefing of what we were supposed to do for the day, we set off to the Jetty which was about 20minutes away.

Alot of fishermen working here.

Then from the jetty, we had our boat driver, a fisherman to bring us to our destination ---- sea grass bed.

The seagrass bed

Our boat stopped here....

Getting started.... With Mr.Choo's guidance.

What we did there was surveying the distribution and growth of the seagrasses by using quadrat method. For those who study SPM or STPM before will definitely know how to do it, so simple, and fast. The harder part was to recognise different species of sea grasses. Hmm... i think everyone gets to overcome it in just a few minutes, easy task.

Measuring length, we gonna place our quadrats every 50m alongside the tape.

Our volunteers of the day also consists of staffs from the Johor National Park.

Seagrasses of various species.

Along the seagrass bed, we saw alot of beautiful marine creatures resting on the bed, revealing themselves only during low tides.

Seagrape, I've tasted some. Hmm, I think I like the taste, fresh although it has mingled with some salty taste of the sea water.

A starfish as big as my foot!

A moving fast starfish

Pink sea cucumber, size of a thumb.

Sea hair, people said it looks like hair swimming in the water......

Sea-pen, it was hidden underground, I purposedly plucked it out, hahaha....

A slimy sea cucumber, secreting sticky material like bubble gum onto my palm.

Hermit crab, nicer appearance than those I saw in Redang Island.

After surveying seagrasses, we also do survey on seahorses and pipefish. By using a huge fish net, 2 guys pulling at each end for a distance of about 100m, trying to catch whatever is in the water. Of course our main targets were seahorse and pipefish which live around seagrass bed. We need to survey the population of seahorse and pipefish here..........

Pipefish, same family with seahorse yet different genus, it is straight while sea horse curls.. The male pregnants.

A female pipefish, take note the roughened tummy.

A pregnant male pipefish with numerous eggs which resembled clear bubbles on its tummy.

A pregnant male pipefish with almost ripened eggs. Can even see eyes in the eggs.

As the tide began to rise very fast by 9.30am, our job for the day has also been done. Before going back to the jetty, we made a brief visit at Pulau Merambong.

Pulau Merambong... a very tiny island, alot of mangrove trees on it. Soft and hard corals, sponges and other marine creatures were also found. Imagine it's just in front of Singapore Checkpoint and Jurong Industrial Port.

A mangrove tree.

The track going back to the carpark at Jetty.
